Introduction

Jute has traditionally been used for packaging, specially sacks. Its  unique physical attributes  have opened up new avenues for diversification, especially in the light of global concerns for the environment. Jute Geotextiles (JGT) are one such diversified products of jute which have proved to be highly effective in addressing soil-related problems in the field of civil engineering.

Geotextiles belongs to a class of technical textiles that addresses various soil related problems in civil engineering. These are either made of synthetic polymers (petrochemical derivatives) or of natural fibres (jute, coir)

Around the world JGT has been lauded as the most acclaimed natural fabric that provides bio-engineering solutions to soil related problems. JGT acts as a change agent to soil greatly improving its behaviour within a span of one or two season cycles.

This has been verified by rigorous laboratory tests by leading researchers and also by extensive field trials. Biodegradability of JGT is, therefore, not a discouraging factor as is perceived by some. Its eco concordance, drapability and manufacturing flexibility excel all other geotextiles in use
